Show some love...for voles

When you think of Valentine’s Day you probably imagine cute cuddly animals like bunnies and ducklings. However, there are plenty of other animals that are just as worthy of your love. Although they may not be as cuddly, animals such as bats, bugs, snakes and spiders all play an important role in the environment.

This Valentine’s Day show some love for one of those less-than-glamorous animals, the Southern Red-Backed Vole. At 13 cm from head to tail, it is rare to spot one of these voles. And even more since these voles were considered extinct until they were discovered in Burns Bog (Miller 2004, Statement 20). Habitat destruction from human activities, such as the south-fraser perimeter road, is the main reason for their declining numbers. By symbolically adopting one of these critters from the Burns Bog Conservation Society, you are helping to ensure that the bog and all the animals that live here are saved.

Click to adopt a vole, or one of the other bog species for your loved ones today. All adoptions come with a personalized certificate and fun facts about the animal.

Yet another reason to enjoy Burns Bog

Introducing the newest addition to the Delta Nature Reserve!

Many of you walk the trails of the Delta Nature Reserve (DNR) every day. But how well do you really know this globally unique ecosystem? To help you get to know some fascinating facts, the Society and Vancity put up seven large interpretive signs along the trails. The signs explain the “how” and “why” of Burns Bog and teach visitors about Burns Bog’s vital role in our environment.  Stop by and check them out for yourself.

The signs are located along the boardwalk trails of the DNR, which are built and maintained by the Society. The boardwalks are also wheelchair and stroller accessible! Click here for directions or here for a trail map of the DNR.

The Society hosts guided interpretive tours. The first public tour is March 26. Click here for more information and more dates. Register by email or call 604-572-0373.

Green Valentine

Four ways to love your partner (and the earth) this Valentine’s Day

1. Buy vintage jewelry.
Show your love some love with antique sapphires, emeralds and rubies from vintage stores—or ask elderly family members if they want to reuse their classic treasures. Vintage is so chic.

2. Give time not things.
Give your Valentines a weekend away, a couples massage, or make dinner. By skipping the material goods, you reduce your waste and spend more time getting cozy with your Valentine. It is a win-win for everyone.

valentine3. Think Green when buying wine, chocolates or flowers.
Did you know that pesticide use on cocoa is next only to cotton as the most chemically treated crop? Instead opt for organic or Fair Trade certified. Flowers are another offender. Opt for local or fair trade. Better yet, get your loved one a potted plant or seeds for their garden. There is no excuse not to choose local wine. Research or ask an employee for an award winning local wine to woo your Valentine.

4. Skip the card.
Cards are read once and then thrown away. This creates a lot of unnecessary waste. This year stay away from the store. Write your sweetheart a poem. Or instead of a card, a photo of you and your sweetheart and write your greeting on the back. Now that's a keeper!
